My little guy is getting big into music and there are three things in life he wants to be right now.
1. A rap artist
2. A reggae artist
3. A ninja
On number 3, I tell him it's all up to him and how far he takes his martial arts. On number 2, his favorite reggae artists are all old school. He's learning from the roots so that's a good thing. But on number 1, well I'm worried. I don't think it's right he should even think about rap unless he knows the history on that as well. Is that taking things too far? Not when you consider he could be listening to the crap this guy is putting out.
Luckily there are guys like Disco who are genuis enough to address the serious misjustice Mr. Britney is doing to rap music and music in general. I mean. This is a guy who was doing pirouettes for a living before becoming Mr. Spears. How in the world does that qualify him to rap about being a playa, gansta dude?
Anyways...old school rap. He loves Doug E Fresh, Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kool Moe D, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, Naughty by Nature, Mantronix and for something a bit more recent ofcourse it has to be the Beastie Boys. But he had yet to hear Public Enemy, and I thought, in my infinite wisdom, he was ready.
So I bought him some Public Enemy and made his listen to "Fight the Power" since that's one that always made me want to do the running man back in the day...
He wasn't impressed with my running man.
But I wasn't too hurt by the "Mom has totally lost it" look on his face because I wasn't feeling too impressed with my running man either.
Shut up. I'm out of practice! lol
However, he was impressed with the force of PE's message and the music.
And also, he was very impressed by the huge, bling clock hanging around Flava Flav's neck and now wants to get one for himself.
Okay. That part worries me.
Anyways, be sure to check out Disco's, Wigga Please, because it's insanely funny.
Peace out.
